One Year of Time
“Time heals all wounds”
this is what they keep saying
you have been gone for just over a year now the world has moved on and expects me to have done the same it cannot understand that your death has become an even greater weight to carry now
the shock has diminished and all illusions of hope have gone forcing reality down my unwelcoming throat
time has forced me to know it and is forcing me still to
accept it
time is not the forgiving friend they would like to believe
but rather the harshest of teachers
and it has taught me well
it has taught me to place a foot forward and force the other
to follow it has taught me to lift my head and pretend as I
hide behind a forged smile
all for their benefit their comfort

however it has done nothing to ease the steady
intensification of sorrow that comes with the heaviness of reality in this next year

Ode aan Elmo
My seun Elmo is drie jaar gelede oorlede op 24 September. Party dae voel dit soos gister en ander dae voel dit asof ek hom dekades gelede gesien het.
Hy was my enigste seun en my jongste kind. Boonop is sy eie pa oorlede toe hy baie jonk was. Dus was daar ’n ongelooflike verhouding tussen my en Elmo. Van kleins af was hy bekommerd dat daar iets met my kan gebeur en dat hy dan sy ander ouer ook verloor.
Ek kon Elmo deur sy hele lewe ondersteun: fisies, emosioneel, geestelik en finansieël. Maar toe ontwikkel hy breinkanker. Ek moes saam met hom help veg. Eindelik moes ek by sy sterfbed staan. Dan staan jy as ouer magteloos en gee jou kind aan die Here oor. As ’n mens so geseënd is om ander kinders te hê, moet jy hulle in hierdie tye van rou juis troetel, waardeer en vasdruk. Hulle is jou rykdom en help jou oorleef. Gelukkig het Elmo twee pragtige dogtertjies nagelaat. Hulle is nou 4 jaar en 7 jaar. Dit is hartbrekend om te hoor hoe hulle steeds na hom verlang en ek as ouma probeer sy liefde vir hulle voortsit. Gelukkig is ek as gelowige oortuig dat ons weer met Elmo verenig sal wees wanneer Christus weer kom.
Sy nagedagtenis is vir ons ’n groot troos. Hy was so vol geduld, deernis en ondersteuning, selfs toe hy al baie siek was. Ek wil sy lewe steeds elke dag vier. Hy bly vir my ’n inspirasie en voorbeeld.
Ons vier Elmo se lewe elke jaar deur ’n liefdadigheidsfunksie aan te bied en die geld aan armes te skenk. Elmo was altyd gretig om almal wat behoeftig is, te help.
Ons herdenk sy nagedagtenis met vreugde en met smart.

It’s only been a little over a year and a half since you left, yet I find myself failing to recall all the memories at times.

Remind me.

Remind me of the times you’d laugh at the way I laugh and call me silly, how we’d watch movies and replay all the funny parts until we couldn’t giggle anymore. Remind me how we ragged Mum for always stating the obvious and how you’d impersonate Dad watching Saturday horse racing on TV. Remind me about the times I’d fetch you from school a few minutes late and you’d pretend not to be mad at me or how you’d insist on sleeping in my bed when I slept out, you thought I never knew.
I remember now.
I remember skinned knees fixed by Mum, Playstation games and swimming. I remember McDonalds, chocolate fingers, pizza with nothing but cheese on it. I remember hugs when I least expected and sms’ just to say “I love you”. I remember “borrowing” all your secret socks and hunting for Christmas presents for the folks. I remember your loud music and you sitting on the roof, me worrying you’d fall and break something and how you’d steal the car, I’d always shout and think the worst. I remember clean jeans, crisp white t-shirts, cologne, far too much hair gel and you reluctantly allowing me to fix the back of your hair.
I remember you thinking you were all grown up and I thinking you’d be my baby brother forever.
I visited your room today, but you don’t live there any longer.
I had forgotten. Your loving big sister – Nicole.

RELEASING NICK INTO GOD’S CARE

My small son Nick, was a great outdoor enthusiast, always in the garden looking for spiders and frogs. During one of his adventures he found a tiny bulbul baby bird, it hardly had any feathers on it, and the weather was starting to turn colder each day. He gently picked up the tiny bird and brought him inside, calling for me to urgently find a shoe box. We found a shoebox and lined it with soft material and some cotton wool to keep him warm. He tenderly laid the bird in the box and covered him to keep him warm. The baby bulbul did not look good, and I was doubtful if he would survive the night. He couldn’t even walk, he kept toppling over. The door was firmly closed as we had cats and “Jimmy’ as my son Nick had named him needed to be kept safe and away from any harm.

Nick ran to the kitchen and pulled out the Pro-Nutro cereal and mixed it with warm milk to a runny consistency. A little dropper was used and soon Jimmy was greedily gulping down each mouthful. Whenever I checked on Nick he was taking great care of the tiny bird, this vigil continued non-stop for a few days. His sister Simone sat close by and watched every day. I did the morning shift and Nick took over in the afternoons. His first question when I fetched him from nursery school was ‘‘How’s Jimmy doing Mom?”

One morning we heard Jimmy chirping softy, we crept into the room. Outside the window were two adult bulbul’s flying around, frantically calling, they sat on the tree close by and carried on calling. By this time Jimmy had made a remarkable recovery, he had even grown feathers and was able to walk. His chirping grew louder and louder. We realized that these were his parent’s who had never given up on him and had come to take him home.

I sat next to my son and explained that his work with Jimmy was done, and that because he had loved and taken such great care of Jimmy he was ready to go back, and the right thing to do now was to release Jimmy into his parent’s care. My son was very sad but understood that Jimmy needed to be with his Mom and Dad.

He kissed him softly on his head and gently took Jimmy outside and laid him softly on the ground under the tree where his parent’s were waiting, soon both parent’s flew down and encouraged Jimmy to fly, after a few lesson’s he managed to fly and took off with his parents on their migration journey. My son’s work was done. Nick was our greatest ‘teacher’ in this life, he taught us so much about compassion, to appreciate nature and see it through his eye’s, it’s ever changing beauty, the love he had for all God’s creations from spiders to birds.

Our work with you our precious son Nick is done on this earth. Now we too have to release you into God’s care and bid you farewell. Fly heavenwards Nick, you are as free as a bird, fly onwards to your new life where God your heavenly father is eagerly awaiting you. You are weak but God will take great care of you and make you strong and well again.

Though our hearts are breaking, we know that you are truly safe and home where you belong in God’s loving care.
